ABSTRACT

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) is the causative agent of porcine pleuroneumonia, and it may be classified into 12 serotypes or may be non-typable. A total of 81 strains of App was isolated from pig pneumonic lungs. All strains were serotyped by the coagglutination test (CoA) and by the indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA) using specific antisera against 9 of the 12 serotypes so far known. Forty three strains (53%) were typed by both techniques. From these 43 strains, 31 belonged to serotype 1, nine to serotype 5 and one to serotypes 3, 4 and 6. Fourteen strains showed autoagglutination tendencies, when serotyping by CoA, however, they were classified as serotype 1 by IHA. Thirteen per cent of the isolations were placed in different serotypes by each of the tests. Finally, 13 strains were not typable by IHA and classified in distinct serotypes by CoA. Use of CoA is suggested for routine typing, whereas IHA is recommended only for final identification. Results of this research agree with the serotype pattern already described in Mexico: From 81 isolations, 45 belonged to serotype 1 and nine to serotype 5; confirming that these two serotypes are the most frequently isolated and found in our country.
