Branchial plexus via axillary blockade. Single or multiple response for neurostimulation

ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the anesthetic effectiveness and quality of the armpit blockade by means of multiple or single neuro-stimulation.
Material and methods: Prospective and comparative study of 50 patients who underwent traumatological surgery by armpit blockade, divided in 2 groups: Group 1 – Location of a single motive response by peripheral nerve stimulation. Group 2 – Location of more than two motive responses. Anesthetic effectiveness, motive and sensitive blockage, as well as the duration of postoperative analgesia were evaluated.
Results: There were no significant demographic differences in both groups. Significant differences were observed in the following parameters, favoring the multiple neuro-stimulation: Motive blockade of 205 minutes p 0.01. Lower requirements of supplementary anesthesia 1/12 (4.5%). No failed procedures. Lower basal pain scale.
Conclusions: Location of more than 2 motive responses provides maximum dependability in the achievement of complete sensitive blockade without increasing the patient’s degree of discomfort or the incidence of neurological complications.
