An account is given of the activities of the two ambulatory clinics which are financed by the International Donkey Protection Trust (IDPT), the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) and the School Veterinary Medicine and Husbandry (FMVZ). The latter belonging to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). As in previous years, markets and villages were visited giving medical treatments and hoof care to donkeys, mules and horses of the marginated peasants from July 1993 to June 1994; during this period 14,139 animals (6,861 horses, 5,215 donkeys and 2,063 mules) of 6,925 owners, were assisted. Total number of treatments given was 17,062. Table 1 shows the organs and systems most frequently affected. The most important problems detected were intestinal parasites, hoof conditions and skin lesions. The latter are due to the utilization of badly improvised harnesses and protectors under the loads carried. Talks were given to the peasants in order to explain better care towards their animals. The programme has met with increasing interest from course coordinators from the Veterinary School at the UNAM and also of those in Puebla and Tlaxcala. In specialized diploma courses it is now obligatory for students to have field practice trips with the ambulatory clinics for periods of several weeks. Two contests were again organized to reward the peasants with the best cared animals in each category (donkeys, horses and mules). As in the past, valuable assistance was received from the Departments of Clinical Pathology, Toxicology, Parasitology, Bacteriology, Pathology and from the Equine Clinics of the UNAM. Many pharmaceutical companies have again donated medicines. The authors are most grateful to all for their help and interest.REFERENCES
