ABSTRACT
In order to evaluate the growth of male
Oreochromis niloticus, O. mossambicus and their hybrid
(O. mossambicus ♂ x O. niloticus ♀) during the fattening phase, an experiment was conducted. It was done in a 100 m
2 earth pond, in which four mosquito net cages of 17.5m
3 were set. Eight fish of each genotype were stocked with a initial mean weight and standard deviation of 42.9 ± 7.8, 47.0 ± 9.59 and 65.41 ± 6.72 g for
O. niloticus, O. mossambicus and the hybrid, respectively. Poultry manure and balanced feed of 25% gross protein were added to each cage according to the body, weight, the weather conditions and the water quality. Weight and measurements were taken monthly. The fattening period lasted 153 days (autumn-winter 1991-1992). At the end of the experiment, the following daily mean weight increase and mean weight average were found: Hybrid, 1.37 g/day and 276.48 ± 22.61 g;
O. niloticus, 1.27 g/day and 239.6 ± 27.94 g, and
O. mossambicus 0.91 g/day and 186.61 ± 37.60 g, respectively. No difierence was found regarding the finishing weight of the hybrid and
O. niloticus, but the former performed better than
O. mossambicus (P ≤ 0.05) and this was similar in
O. niloticus.
