ABSTRACT
A prospective study of bluetongue was conducted in 2 cattle herds in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. The study included the monthly detection of bluetongue virus (BTV) group-specific antibodies and collection of culicoid flies. In January 1988, the total number of animals in both cattle herds (600) was classified as seropositive to BTV using the ELISA method. Based on this result, 40 adult cows and 35 calves born during October 1987 and January 1988 were monthly tested (January-December 1988) for detection of BTV group-specific antibodies. A positive seroconversion pattern to BTV was observed in some calves as early as March and April. Most newborn calves became susceptible, as defined by the absence of maternal antibodies, to BTV infection by 6 months of age. Serologic evidence of BTV activity in calves coincided with the abundance of
Culicoides insignis trapped during the study period.
