ABSTRACT
Two experiments were conducted in order to evaluate changes on sesame straw (SS) digestibility using a molasses (9%) - urea (1%) supplement (Mu) and a probiotic,
Saccharomyces cerevisiae (PRO). In experiment 1, fiber (NDF)
in situ digestibility (ISD) was determined using 12 ruminally cannulated sheep (45 + 508 kg), Where samples (5g SS) in nylon bags, were incubated at 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h, in four periods. Treatments were assigned in a factorial arrangement (2 x 2 x 3), where factors consisted on two levels of P (0 or .5 g/animal/day), two levels of MU (0 or 10%), combined with three levels of SS (50, 60 and 70%; plus the concentrate). Fiber ISD was increased (P ‹ .05) by the PRO and the MU at all incubation times; also by 50% SS compared to 60 and 70% SS. In Experiment 2,
in vivo digestibility (IVD) was studied using 70% SS (plus 30 or 20% concentrate), two levels of PRO (0 or .5 g/animal/day) and MU (0 or 10%), and one control (T5) ration (40% SS, 30% alfalfa hay and 30% concentrate), in a complete randomized design with 3 sheep by treatment). Treatments were: T1, MU 0% + PRO 0%; T2, MU 0% + PRO .5%; T3, MU 10% + PRO 0% and T4, 10% + PRO .5. Fiber IVD (%) was different (P ‹ .05): 66.8
a (T4), 61.9
ab (T5), 52.2
bc (T3), 52.1
bc (T2) and 41.5
c (T1). Intake and ruminal pH did not change (P › .05). Protozoa/ml x 10
3 was different (P ‹ .05): 1128
a (T4), 950
ab (T5), 900
ab (T3), 764
b (T2) and 771
b (T1). Therefore, both the probiotic and the supplement increased fiber digestibility and number of protozoa which could be associated with the increment in fiber digestibility.
