ABSTRACT
he transfusion of globular package represents a potential risk for the patient, because during the storage, the erythrocyte can produce metabolites that originate diverse reactions in the organism. In the erythrocyte, the free radicals derived from oxygen (RLox) take place during the gaseous interchange between the oxi-hemoglobin and metahemoglobin.
In vivo, the RLox are eliminated by antioxidants enzymes, nevertheless, in globular packages the accumulation of the RLox can damage the membrane of the erythrocyte and the antioxidants systems can fail.
Objective: Our objective was to determine the malondialdehyde concentration and the activity of antioxidants enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutath ione peroxidase in preserved globular packages of a blood bank.
Material and methods: In globular packages was determined in time zero and until for 35 days, the concentration of malondialdehyde, the activity of antioxidants enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, as well as the concentration of the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase and potassium, like hemolysis index.
Results: As of the seven days of storage, increased in the malondialdehyde concentration and diminished the activity of antioxidants enzymes. The lactate dehydrogenase and potassium presence was increased gradually until a maximum of 35 days.
Conclusions: The increase in the malondialdehyde concentration in globular packages and the decrease in the activity of antioxidants enzyme, being this a factor that brings about adverse reactions to the people who receive erythrocyte concentrates.
