Knowledge in the prevention of allergic illnesses for the parents of children that go to the external consultation of pediatrics

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The pediatric practice need of educational methods for the parents to prevent chronic and dysfunctional illness in the future of their children. The educational methods are consider effective if are capable to change attitudes of the parents to improve their environment to diminish the risk for the development of chronic illness. To prevents allergic diseases we need to consider these like a Public Health problem and to take preventive measures we need the participation of the pediatrician who is first in contact with the children. Methods: The major objective of this Study was to determine in the level of knowledge of the parents acquired in the pediatric clinic are effective to detect risk factors for the development of allergic disease in their children, and with this knowledge change their attitudes to avoid this risk. We realize a transverse, cohort, study we do a questionnaire of 23 questions of the parents who attended the pediatric clinic since February 13th to April 30th 1999. We classify the level of knowledge in order to the next score: a) 0-20% Very low, b) 21-50% low, c) 51-79% good, d) 80-100% very good. We consider a score between 51-79% the parents are capable to detect risk factors for allergy ant between 80-100% they going to be capable to change their attitudes too. Results: The average of the score was 54 points (good). The parents with higher education obtain the highest score, even the physician are the major information source of the benefits of breastfeeding the 47% of the mothers offer to they children less than 3 months of breastfeeding, the 53% of the parents start the introduction to food between 3 to 6 months they are capable to recognize the strawberries, egg, and chocolate like food with allergy properties. 53% of the parents still are smoking in their homes even they are capable to recognize the contribution of smoke to development of allergy. 100% of the parents solicited information for preventive measures for allergy in the first year of life of they children and the best source the pediatrician. Discussion: In Latin America were to detect risk population to the development of allergic disease enhance the costs, continue with the public health measures like prolonged breastfeeding and diminish the passive smoke are still important, for this the pediatrician an the allergist need to improve they clinical skills, to change their attitudes for diminish this risk in the development of allergic disease.REFERENCES
