ABSTRACT
Introduction.Deaths of women as consequence of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum complications still occur in developing countries. Underreporting of deaths masks the magnitude of the problem. Underreporting of maternal deaths in Mayan communities from Eastern Yucatan, Mexico remains unknown.
Objective. To identify and to evaluate underreporting of maternal deaths in nine Mayan communities from Eastern of Yucatan, Mexico.
Materials and Methods. Birth and death certificates were reviewed. The relatives of dead women from 1997 to 2001 were visited. The cases were classified according to the CIE-10. Annual percentages of underreporting and maternal mortality ratios (MMR) were calculated.
Results. A total of 21 maternal deaths were found, of which six had not been reported to the authorities. Underreporting of deaths occurred in 1998 and 1999 with 40.0 % and 50.0 %, respectively. A number of 14 deaths per 1000 live births were the highest MMR in 2000.
Conclusions. Underreport ing and trend of maternal mortality fell into the studied quinquennium in the nine Mayan communities. It is necessary to encourage completion the death certificates properly as to enable the coding and for investigation of the associated factors to tackle the underreporting issue.
