ABSTRACT
Antecedents: The brachymetatarsia is a bone suffering of the congenital foot. At the moment there are diverse surgical procedures to promote the bone elongation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the results of the elongation in the brachymetatarsia with bone fixer and external fixer «RC-4».
Methods: Series of cases with 14 patients, 16 feet with brachymetatarsia that fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion approaches. They were considered: sex, age, affected foot, time of beginning of the bone elongation post surgery; time of use of the external fixer, obtained bony longitude, complications and the patient’s satisfaction with the treatment. The results were analyzed with the SPSS 10.0.
Results: 87.5% women; medium of age 14 years; right foot affected 56.2%; beginning the bone elongation seven days post surgery 62.5%; time they used the external fixer three months 68.8%; obtained bone longitude of 25 mm when concluding the treatment 37.5% of the cases; complications 25%; satisfaction with the treatment 92.8%.
Conclusions: The bone elongation gotten with the external fixer «RC-4» is a good alternative for the treatment of the brachymetatarsia.
