ABSTRACT
Objetive: To compare the usefulness of enteral feeding with continuous oral infussion technique and bolus technique in pre-term newborns
Material and methods: 56 pre-term newborns were studied. 2 groups: 25 from Group A received continuous oral infusión and 26 on group B received bolus feeding every 3 hs. In all of them feeding was started in the first week of life, with commercial formula for pre-term babies at 20ml/Kg/day with daily increases of 20ml/Kg/day until reaching daily requirements. Weight gain and gastric tolerance were used for the evaluation of the outcomes between the two groups.
Results: Mean weight in group A was 1715 ± 451 gr, and 1761 ± 329 gr in group B. The gestational Age at admission was 34.5 ± 1.4 weeks in group A and 35.1 ± 1 weeks for those on group B. The daily weight gain was 13.8 gr in group A and 14.5 gr in group B (p=ns).
Conclusions: Both techniques, infusión oral feeding and bolus feeding were well tolerated ant the weight gain was similar as well as the number of day of hospital stay
