ABSTRACT
Objective: to determine the prevalence and risk factors for depression in the adolescent population of a high school
Material and Methods: a cross-sectional study was made, the degree of depression were classified by Beck´s Depression Inventory, they were grouped by sex and 2 groups of age (14 to 16 years old and of 17 to 19 years old), violence and familiar integration were evaluated, for the statistical analysis it was applied to descriptive statistic and multiple logistic regression analysis.
Results: the total prevalence for depression was of 18,6% (87 of 468), the 12,4% (58) corresponded to feminine sex and the 6,2% (29) to masculine sex. The independently associated factors to depression were: sex (OR 2,02, CI95% 1.2-3.4, p=0.008), familiar violence (OR 6,38, CI95% 3.8-12.2, p=0.000) and age (OR 1,84, CI95% 1.1-3.0, p=0.018).
Conclusion: it is important to establish measures of support and prevention of the familiar violence as well as an opportune treatment of the adolescents with depression with the objective to diminish this problem that every time receives a greater importance like a health problem
