ABSTRACT
The aim of the present review was to present up-to-date information on the use of the purin derivatives technique in domestic ruminants. The purine derivatives technique is a simple and noninvasive alternative for the study of microbial-N flow to intestine in ruminants. There are information and quantitative models for cattle and sheep and, several laboratory methods which allow the use of this technique. The purine derivatives technique has the advantaje of using intact animal but, the disadvantaje of requiring total urine collection. The use of urine spot-samples together with the purine derivatives:creatinine index can be an alternative to replace total urine collection but more research is needed in this area. Purine derivatives in milk do not appear to be a reliable alternative to urine collection. Further validation is needed in the parameters used to estimate microbial-N flow such as; recovery and digestibility of purine bases in normally fed animals. Nevertheless, compared with traditional methods, the purine derivatives technique represent a valuable tool to study and understand rumen dinamics.
