ABSTRACT
Introduction: Mesenteric cysts are intra-abdominal formations that present an incidence of 1:20,000 admissions in the infantile area. We reviewed the 15-year casuistry at a hospital in Villahermosa, Tabasco State.
Material and methods: It was performed a retrospective review on the cases of mesenteric cysts diagnosed from the years of 1993 to 2008 at a hospital in Villahermosa City, Tabasco State, Mexico. We analyzed the sociodemographic variables, the clinical record, the physical examination, the auxiliaries for the diagnosis, the findings, and the surgical procedure, as well as the histopathology diagnosis. A descriptive statistical method of analysis was used.
Results: We studied 21 cases in 15 years, with ages ranging from one month to 12 years old. The clinical frame was characterized by abdominal pain (11), absence of defecation, vomits or fever. At the moment of the physical examination, it was found palpable mass, abdominal distension or signs or peritoneal irritation, and five cases presenting intestinal occlusion. The affected area was the ileum in 15 patients, the colon in 3 cases, the jejunum in one patient, and the omentum in two cases.
Discusion: This series of cases of mesenteric cysts at the «Dr. Rodolfo Nieto Padrón» Infantile Hospital in Villahermosa, Tabasco, with 21 cases in 15 years, shows a frequency of 4 in 20,000 admissions, the greatest reported amount up to date.
