ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the associated maternal factors to the maternal breast-feeding in a Regional Hospital.
Material and methods: We performed a prospective study in 350 mothers with unique product whose children were born during 1997-2004. All participant mothers were randomly selected. Clinical and demographic history was obtained through the questionnaire, questions were asked about maternal factors related with maternal breast-feeding duration. We considered like exclusive maternal breast-feeding (EMB) to the exclusive breast-feeding during the first four months of life and abandonment of EMB to the use of infant formula like unique or complementary food during that same period.
Results: The age average of the mothers interviewed was 26.4 ± 5.2 years, 61.4% breastfed exclusively during four months. Mothers of between 15-19 years of age (65.4%), the housewives (67.9%), with level of basic schooling (68.8%) and with stable union (62.7%) provided EMB most frequently. The factors that determined the LME-abandonment were: to be mother worker (OR = 2.47, IC95% 1.50-4.05), first pregnancy (OR = 1.75, IC95% 1.04-3.04), and to have little knowledge on the benefits of the maternal breast-feeding (OR = 2.06, IC95% 1.30-3.27).
Conclusions: In our series, 61% breastfed exclusively during four months. To be mother worker, first pregnancy and to have little knowledge on the benefits of the maternal breast-feeding were the associated maternal factors to the abandonment breast-feeding.
