ABSTRACT
The Long Terminal Repeat (LTR) of the human immunodeficiency virus genome functions as an essential site for the control of viral transcription. Although the LTR does not codify either structural or accessory proteins, its function is intimately linked to viral replication in response to mitogens, citokines and even other stimuli generated by opportunistic infectious agents. This revision attempts to describe the
in vitro function of the LTR in viral replication and its importance in the pathogenesis of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
