ABSTRACT
Introduction: Bone tumors of the pelvic area a challenge for the orthopedist surgeon. The pelvic ring has no true barriers to contain the growth of neoplasias and thus by the time patients present to us, their lesion is already quite large.
Objective: Describe the frequency of the bone tumors of the pelvis and their treatment. Any type of malignant bone tumor may occur in the bony pelvis, with the most common ones being the metastatic lesions, myeloproliferative tumors, chondrosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma and osteosarcoma. The treatment of pelvic tumors should be individualized, but the surgeon usually has to decide between hemipelvectomy, when the limb cannot be spared, and internal hemipelvectomy.
Conclusions: The most important aspect of the surgery of bone tumors of the pelvis is achieving clear surgical margins. This surgery has high complication and morbidity rates.
