ABSTRACT
Background and objective: About 10% of patients attending the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases’ Smoking Cessation Clinic are diagnosed with COPD; until now, the abstinence rate has not been evaluated in this population. This study was aimed to compare the long-term success rate in quitting smoking in COPD and non-COPD subjects after they have received a tobacco cessation program.
Patients and method: Three groups of patients with COPD and three without COPD were contacted by phone 6, 12 or 24 months after concluding a cognitive-behavioral smoking cessation program. Smoking cessation was deemed successful if a subject answered that he or she did not smoke during the time lapse. Subjects who could not be located or answered they still smoke were considered as relapses.
Results: There were 88 subjects with COPD and 167 without COPD. In the COPD group the success rate at 6, 12 and 24 months was 56, 30 and 22%, respectively. Success among subjects without COPD was 49, 39 and 30%, respectively (p = non significant).
Conclusions: A recent diagnosis of COPD in smokers does not influence the long-term success rate for quitting smoking. New educational interventions are required for smokers with COPD.
