ABSTRACT
Objective: The main alarm signs are described that the clinical that assists families in perinatal face, can look for to identify psicosocial problems. They are also described, the characteristics of a brief instrument developed for the early detection of such difficulties.
Methodology: The results of a survey applied to 109 parents of children 3-14 months old (40.4% boys and 57.8% girls) that attended the pediatric unit of the Child and Family Center, Menninger Clinic in the United States, are described.
Results: The reported problems were the following: sleeping problems 33.95% (sleepiness during the day or sleeping difficulties at night), excessive crying 22%, eating difficulties 22%, difficulties in the sensibility to visual, auditive or tactile stimuli 7.3%, anxiety 4.6%. 37% of the parents mentioned an important problem, 25% depression and 3.7% the possibility of domestic violence.
Conclusions: This study opens the possibility to identify problems during the first year of life and of early intervention. The need of the medical and nursing staff to receive training in this field so they can guide parents on this kind of problems, is addressed.
