ABSTRACT
Introduction. The increased concentration of serum thyrotropin (TSH), in presence of normal concentration of circulating thyroid hormones, suggests an abnormal situation as subclinical hyperthyroidism. The report on the topic in the literature in Cuba are rather unclear, which motivated us to study this thyroid dysfunction to determine the prevalence in the elder population that received medical care from the Medical-Surgical Investigations Centre.
Material and Methods. In this study, we analyzed 205 patients who were between 65 and 90 years of age seeking medical care during the period April 2003 to October 2006. The patients had unspecificsymptoms and withouta prticular thyroid pathology. A quantification of the TSH from all patients was done by ELISA technique usin a reference value of ≥ 5 µU/l.
Conclusions and Results. We found subclinical hypothyroidism in 11 patients (5.3 %), of whon, 9 were female gender. This study shows discrepancies for the figure of prevalence of hypothyroidism from studies published in other countries, although in general these differences are very dependant on methods used and lab techniques, and the origin of the studied populations. Nevertheless we cannot compare our results with other studies on Cuban populations as up to date there are no prevalence studies in thyroid dysfunctions available in elderly people in our country.
