ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the main changes in salivary composition (sialochemistry) of pregnant patients.
Material and methods: Total stimulated saliva was collected from 50 pregnant patients and 50 non-pregnant women from the DIFEM Gyneco-Obstetric hospital. Gravimetric salivary flow rate and salivary pH was determined to each sample. An evaluation of the most prevalent oral cavity signs and symptoms was performed in all cases.
Results: Salivary flux (87 + 0.49 mL/min) and salivary pH (6.6 + 0.19) of the pregnant patients were lower than the ones informed in the literature; while in the non-pregnant patients salivary pH was between the normal intervals for stimulated saliva [salivary flow rate (0.94 + 0.54 + 0.54mL/min) and salivary pH (7.09 + 0.19)]. A significant association between decreased salivary flux and the presence of bad taste in the mouth (χ
2 = 4.6; p = 0.03) and between decreased salivary flow rate and bum bleeding (χ
2 = 3.56; p = 0.05) was demonstrated. It was also observed a significant association between pregnancy and the following variables: 1) gingival enlargement (p = 0.01), 2) difficulty to swallow (p = 0.05) and decreased salivary secretion (p ‹ 0.001).
Conclusions: Changes in saliva composition, possibly contribute to the severity in alterations present in these patients oral cavity; since when there is an alteration in saliva composition, the saliva homeostatic function is diminished.
