ABSTRACT
Introduction: The premature newborns with arteriovenous persistent conduct have an increased risk of presenting intraventricular hemorrhage. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the prophylaxis use of intravenous indomethacin in newborn, with low birth weight or similar to 1,750 grams, it prevents the appearance of intraventricular hemorrhage.
Material and methods: We selected the newborn that they were subjected to mechanics ventilation, not present hemodynamic or hematologyc alterations, and without congenital malformations. We administered 3 doses of indomethacin 0.2-0.1-0.1 mg, every 12 hours; one carries out transfontanelar ultrasonography to verify the presence or not of intraventricular hemorrhage. A historic control was included.
Results: There was a decrease of the risk for hemorrhage for the patients to those that were applied indometacina (OR = 0.25; CI 95% = 0.13-0.49; p ‹ 0.001). It was a decrease of the risk for hemorrhage degrees, for the degree II (OR = 0.13; CI 95% = 0.04 - 0.39; p ‹ 0.01) and degree III (OR = .09; CI 95% = 0.01 - 0.68; p ‹ 0.0005).
Conclusions: In base in our results and according to that described by the literature, we confirmed a protective effect of the use of indomethacin prophylaxis for newborn with lower weight or similar to 1,750 grams that they received mechanic ventilation.
