ABSTRACT
The use of stem cells has been developed as a therapeutic option in diverse pathologies. The umbilical cord blood donation is an important way for its obtaining. A revision of 94 cases of cord blood donation in Foundation Clinica Medica Sur was carried out and we found that only 37.2% of the samples were accepted by the cord bank. Among the exclusion causes the most incident with 22%, was correspondent to the donations that spend more than 40 hours for its obtaining; followed by those that have a low cellularity (19%) and those with low weight. With fewer incidences we found those causes due to serological characteristics of the sample itself. It is needed to promote umbilical cord donation, to detect and correct defects is its process, that obstacle getting the maximum benefit of this valuable resource.
