ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness in diminishing peripheral oxidative stress markers by means of the design and application of a high-in vitamins C and E diet.
Methods: The study included infetile women with laparoscopic diagnosis of endometriosis from the Instituto Nacional de Perinatologia “Isidro Espinosa de los Reyes”. Two groups were created and women with endometriosis were randomly allocated to the control gropup (n = 15), which received a normal diet, or the vitamins group (n = 15), which received a high-in vitamins C and E diet. All the patients assisted to 5 follow-up visits and received nutritional council. In each visit, periopheral blood samples were taken to determine lipid hidroperoxides (LHP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations.
Results: The high-in vitamins C and E diet designed and given to the vitamins group had 660% Recommended Dietary Intake (RDI) pf votamin C (500 mg of ascorbic acid) and 133% RDI of vitamin E (20 mg of ?-tocopherol). At the end of the study, the vitamins group showed a lower LHP and MDA concentration in peripheral blood when compared to the control group, from the third and fourth month of intervention (p ‹ 0.05), respectively. The intragroupal anlysis of oxidative stress markers showed a lower concentration of both oxidative stress markers since the third month o intervention in the vitamins group (p ‹ 0.05). No differences were fround in the control group.
Conclusion: The high-in vitamins C and E diet diminished peripheral oxidative stress markers in women with endometriosis after four months of intervention.
