ABSTRACT
Introduction: Sexually transmitted diseases represent a serious problem for public health, one of these, the human papilloma virus (HPV), has acquired a peculiar importance, among other reasons, for its high incidence and relation with cervical cancer, which demands an integral study of the phenomenon, that includes not only the physical area but also the psychological area which is affected as well, allowing the possibility of developing knowledge about the emotional consequences secondary to the human papilloma virus (HPV).Objective: To determine if women infected by HPV have a greater tendency to present reactive anxiety to the event, anxiety as a characterogical trait psychological distress and a reduced self concept than infected women.
Material and methods: Descriptive, cross, retrospective study non experimental of a sample divided in two groups with independent observations, considering the human papilloma virus as the inclusive variable. The tests given to the groups were: Tennessee Self Concept Scale, Characterogical Anxiety Inventory and the General Health Questionnaire.
Results: Women infected by HPV showed a bigger tendency to present anxiety as a trait. Significative differences about self concept were found in the subtest “Physical me”. The General Health Questionnaire didn’t draw any differences between groups.
Conclusions: The high punctuation in the sub test “Physical self” is related with the therapeutic adherence optimizing the result of the proposed treatments.
