ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine if the results from the sift for HIV1/HIV2, that usually fall into the gray zone, may indicate immediate seroconversion. Materials and methods: At the blood bank of National Medical Center XXI Century (Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI), we performed a study to determine the aim established above. The research went from May 2002 to January 2003. During this period, 43,669 blood donors were received. From them, 72 obtained repeat results on the gray zone; therefore, they were applied a confirmation test. The sift was repeated in forty of the 72 donors between three and nine months after the donation; applying a confirmation test to those ones presenting results on the gray zone or being reactive. Results: Twenty-two donors with HCV results on the gray zone were taken a second blood sample; ten of them repeated the results on the gray zone, but two of them passed from negative confirmation to indeterminate confirmation in the second sample. Twelve donors presenting HIV on the gray zone were taken a second sample; only three of them were practiced a second confirmative test. The rest presented a sift completely negative. Conclusions: It is necessary to perform deeper studies to determine if there is a relationship between gray zone and seroconversion.REFERENCES
