ABSTRACT
Background: Increasing frequency chronic degenerative disease dependent on the improvement of mean population age and life expectative has generated an urgent need to understand the aging process in order to prevent and control this ever expanding problem.
Goal: To analyze the critical facts and the possibilities that may determine achieving a healthier longevity including the biological, psychological and social issues involved.
Material and methods: This is a national and international scientific and medical literature review including statistical, social, medical political issues including chronobiological aging markers, basic research in order to establish and recommend strategies to improve longevity and bio-psycho-social health quality.
Outcome: Aging is a universal process that involves every living being, with diverse manifestations on every cell, organ and system through interactive, progressive, and irreversible events that initiate at the cellular level expanding gradually through the entire organism with the addition of intrinsic genetic and extrinsic environmental factors, silently for many years. This process can be analyzed periodically with clinical, laboratory and imagenology determinations through biological aging markers.
Conclusions: “Homo Longevus” is a healthy aging longevity paradigm that in order to be created requires of an integral preventive approach of the bio-psycho-social issues plus the ecological protection of our planet; nutrition, hydration, aerobic and resistance exercise, stress management etc. Up to day we lack of a consolidated theory in order to explain completely the unsolved mysteries of life, senescence and longevity, in consequence there is no single golden biological marker for aging. Some evidence has emerged supporting DHEA as a useful biological marker with therapeutical implications. Solid scientific, multicentric, prospective, research is needed to confirm the real potential of hormone replacement therapies including combined hormones such as estrogens, progestagens, testosterone, DHEA, melatonin and triiodothyronine among
