Quick detection of platelet concentrates contaminated by bacterias

ABSTRACT
Introduction: When transfusing a polluted hemocomponent with bacterias you can cause a bacterial sepsis. The temperature of conservation of the Platelet Concentrates (PC) of 20-24°C it could favor the bacterial growth.
Objective: To implement quick, easy and economic method for the identification of platelet concentrates contaminated by bacterias.
Material and methods: A total of 2,804 units was processed, 2132 PC entered to the study, to which are determined glucose and pH using reagent strips, with glucose ≤ of 200 and/or pH ≤ of 6, they were considered positive and they were sent to bacteriology for culture in two enriched means, agar blood and thioglicolato broth, if this presented alteration, you proceeded to sow in agar blood, agar azida and EMB.
Results: Of the 2,132, 26 were positive in the method of reagent strips, of these 26 correspondents to bacteriology, 2 were positive and it was determined in both that it was a Propionibacterium acnes; a PC had four days of storage (glucose 200, pH 6) and the other five days (glucose 200, pH 6.5).
Conclusions: We could suggest for our hospital that before to the transfusion to do the method of reagent strip to the PC which have three or more days of storage.
