ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the frequency and epidemiological characteristics of injuries caused by bullfight cattle in the state of Tlaxcala.
Design: Observational, descriptive study with retrospective interviews.
Statistical analysis: Descriptive with central tendency measures and simple absolute and relative frequencies.
Setting: Public and private health services in the state of Tlaxcala.
Patients and methods: Retrospective interview to the surgeons that treated, in the state of Tlaxcala, injuries caused by bull charges during the previous 5 years, in regard to the care provided. Information was complemented, when possible, with the clinical records. The studied variables were: age, gender, and working activity of the patients, the physical place and anatomical site of the injury.
Results: From the 174 patients, 93.7% were men and 6.3% were women, their ages ranged from 12 to 73 years, mean of 23.5, mode of 24, and median of 28. The working activity was not related to bull fights in 79%; the physical place where the injury occurred was in the field in 9%, in the bullfight ring in 15%, and on the streets in 76.0%. According to importance, lesions were: due to the horns in 48-8%, ecchymosis and excoriations in 24.2%, cranioencephalic trauma in 16.7%, and fractures in 10.3%.
Conclusion: Injuries were mostly present in young men, whose working activity is not related to bull fights, and occurred during folklore events of popular festivities. Their epidemiological description is important due to the urgent treatment required by these patients.
