ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the effects of flunitrazepam
versus midazolam on the heart rate during cardiac catheterization in children with cardiac diseases.
Type of design: Clinical Trial.
Material and methods: We studied two groups of 20 patients each one scheduled to cardiac catheterism. The group I received intravenous flunitrazepam (12.5 µg/kg), and the group II patients received intravenous midazolam (125 µg/kg) as only dose. Heart rate was monitored during the procedure and was statistically evaluated with ANOVA and t student test.
Results: In the group I the initial HR was of 143 ± 33 and to the end of the procedure 117 ± 8 beats minute. (
p › 0.7413). In the group II the base line HR was of 133 ± 11 and to the end 115 ± 7 beats minute (
p › 0.9862).
Conclusions: Midazolam used for sedation in children with cardiac catheterism is a useful tool to maintain a stable heart rate during the procedure.
