ABSTRACT
Neutropenic colitis is also known as typhlitis, ileocecal syndrome and neutropenic enterocolitis. It is often associated to malignant hematological pathology, accompanied with neutropenic inductive therapy.
Material and methods: Retrospective, longitudinal and descriptive trial was designed including all patients with a diagnosis of neutropenic colitis who attended to the General Hospital of Mexico, from January 1997 to December 2001.
Results: There were 17 patients with a diagnosis of neutropenic colitis; 10 were men and 7, women. Range of age was 17 to 61 years, with a medium of 36. All patients had hematological pathology and were receiving chemotherapy. Predominant signs and symptoms were: fever in 17 patients (100%); abdominal pain in right iliac fossa in 11 (64.70%); diarrhea in 9 (52.94%), generalized abdominal pain in 3 (17.64%), peritoneal irritation in 1 (5.88%). Results of hemocultures were
Escherichia coli in 6 patients,
Clostridium in 5,
Candida in 5,
Klebsiella in 3 and
Pseudomonas in 1. There were more than one germ in 6.
Conclusion: The 17 patients died.
