ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare clinical outcomes of MICS (biaxial micro incision 1.2 mm) and micro coaxial surgery (2.2 mm).
Material and methods: This prospective, longitudinal, comparative, experimental and randomized clinical study compromised 161 eyes (140 patients) assigned randomly to a MICS (61 eyes) or micro coaxial (100 eyes) incision group. Both underwent phacoemulsification using pulsed and torsional ultrasound energy, followed by micro incision intraocular lens implantation.
Results: The treatment groups did not differ in baseline characteristics (Best Corrected Visual Acuity, median BCVA of 20/114 preoperatively in both groups, p=.89). Six weeks after surgery, median BCVAs were 20/25 in both groups, p=.66. Median changes in astigmatism were 0.14 diopters (D)v 0.04 standard deviations (SD) in the MICS group, and 0.16 D ± 0.17 (SD) in the micro coaxial group (p=0.44). Final median incision size was for MICS, 2.45 mm ± 0.54 (SD) and for the micro coaxial group, 2.23 mm ± 0.07(SD), p=0.0001. Surgical complications occurred in 21.4% of MICS cases, and in 2% of micro coaxial ones.
Conclusions: Both groups of microincisional surgery provided highly satisfactory clinical results. Although there was a statistically significant difference in final incision size between groups, in practical terms it was unimportant.
