ABSTRACT
Background: Tuberculous bacilli is the infectious agent that causes more deaths in the world. In Mexico, tuberculosis is still considered to be endemic. Epidemiologic studies have described factors such as lack of resources, an inadequate public health plan, the HIV epidemic, substance abuse and multidrug resistant tuberculosis as contributors for the epidemic. This study was conducted to describe histologic and clinical characteristics in patients infected by mycobacteria at the ABC Hospital.
Methods: We reviewed the archives of the pathology, and microbiology laboratories within the period between January 2000 and May 2003 in search of patients diagnosed with suspicion mycobacterial disease. Clinical charts were reviewed in patients with a positive immunohistochemistry for PPD and sites of infection were described.
Results: We found 38 patients with a positive immunohistochemistry for PPD for chart review. We found 38 patients with a diagnosis of mycobacterial disease. The sites of infection in frequency order were: thoracic, osseous, nodal, abdominal, cutaneous, endometrial, pericardial, mediastinal, renal and placentary.
Conclusions: Mycobacterial disease at the ABC Medical Center is predominantly extrapulmonary. Because of the retrospective nature of this study it was not possible to validate this technique with the gold standard.
