ABSTRACT
Maternal and fetal health complications due to preeclampsia along with its unknown etiology have made searching of a diagnostic marker an imperative. Former measurements of sexual hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in serum of patients with preeclampsia was found to be decreased even before the second half of gestation, opening the possibility as a mean of prevention. Hence we measured serum SHBG concentrations through radioimmunoassay in women with preeclampsia and normal pregnancy (controls). Women with gestational hypertensive disease, unexpectedly exhibited significant (p‹0.01) higher levels of SHBG than normal pregnant females, contrary to previous observations and despite the hypoproteinemic condition prevailing in preeclampsia.
