ABSTRACT
The Wernicke´s encephalopathy is a severe disorder caused by vitamin B1 deficiency. Described in 1881 with its main symptoms: mental confusion, ataxia and ophthalmoplegia. It is rarely described but in USA it is identified in 0.8 – 2.8% of all autopsies. Susceptible people are alcoholics, aids, or other immunodeficiencies, hemodyalisis or patients with cancer. It is important to remember that pregnant people can present this avitaminosis due to feed troubles, or diabetes mellitus non recognized.
