ABSTRACT
With the objective to evaluate cysticercosis in pigs in a rural community, a study was undertaken to establish different aspects such as: its frequency in tongues of pigs, the characteristics of the community that favour the transmission of the disease, the age of first infection in pigs euthanized at the ages of 2, 4, 5 and 6 months, and a possible seasonal variation. Tongue examinations were done in 151 pigs, and 13.2% of them were found positive. A survey of 146 homes (of a total of 184), revealed that 100% have no drinking water, 97.2% no drainage, 71.9% no laetrines, and 67.8% own pigs of which 88.9% roam freely in the streets. Out of 52 postmortem studies 32% were infected with the metacestode of
Taenia solium. There were more positive cases with the increasing age factor but this was statistically not significant (P ‹ 0.05). There was a seasonal variation. Groups of piglets at 2 months of age were infected during the dry hot season, while during the cooler rainy season, the infection was not found in pigs under 5 months of age. Further studies on the transmission dynamics are necessary.
