ABSTRACT
The salmonelosis in the developing countries continue being one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in the children. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of
Salmonella in children with diarrhea. The stool samples obtained from children patients with diarrhea (n = 230) and of a group control (n = 40) were analyzed. 56.9% (n = 131) of the diarrheal samples were positive for some serovars of
Salmonella; S. Ohio (28.6%),
S. typhimurium (16.9%),
S. infantis (10.4%),
S. anatum (0.43%) and
S. newport (0.43%). In the group of the healthy children (n = 40),
Salmonella was identified in 5%;
S. ohio and S. typhimurium (2.5% in every case). The amoeba
E. histolytica/E. dispar was identified in 56.9% (n = 161) and Giardia intestinalis in 36% (n = 83) of sick children, whereas for the healthy children
E. histolytica/E. dispar was detected in 52.5% (n = 21) and Giardia intestinalis in 27.5%. The association of
Salmonella with other enteropathogens in the sick children and in the healthy, indicate the severity of the infection, for this reason, the medical treatment was initiated immediately.
