ABSTRACT
Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents a public health concern in Mexico. This illness has an impact as much physical as emotional; throughout the chronicity process, the process deteriorates quality of life in persons suffering from it. For this reason, the purpose of the present investigation was to determine the impact of deterioration of quality of life in a sample of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). We carried out an expo-facto, transverse-type study in which we attempted to identify and typify possible functional peculiar-ities. The patients participating in the study were 100 persons who came for out-patient consul-tation at a clinical hospital of the IMSS in the capital city of San Luis Potosí in Mexico who were diagnosed with DM-2 by their own physicians. Deterioration in quality of life was measured with Scale of Quality of Life Related with Health (ESCAVIRS) in its validated version and stand-ardized Spanish. The dependent variable to consider was evaluation of index of deterioration of quality of life estimated by ESCAVIRS scale. The independent variable was understood as evolution time of chronic-degenerative condition of DM2 of selected patients, as well as certain sociodemographic aspects. Results revealed that 43 % of the studied sample dealt with some degree of deterioration in quality of life in evaluated areas included in the scale. Areas of interaction stand out with the health team, sexual dysfunction, and emotional and physical aspects, among others. Patients with › 5 years of evolution of DM2, low educational level, and › 50 years of age were at risk for deterioration. We conclude that degree of deterioration of quality of life in this type of patient with DM2 is progressive and is associated with the degenerative evolution of the illness.
