ABSTRACT
Since the first ureteroscopic treatment of stones in children was described in 1988, for the handling of ureteral stones, the advance in endoscopic armamentarium has been dramatic. In general, indications for the treatment in ureteric calculi are the same than those for the adult patient. It is presented the case of a 4-year patient with diagnosis of left ureteric calculi in distal segment and 6 months of evolution. Lithotripsy was done with ureteric lithotripsy without incidents. Advances in the endourology indications to carry out open surgery have conduced to a significant reduction from 26% in 1987-1995 to less than 8% since 1996 to the present.
Treatment alternatives for children with urinary tract calculi are the following: shock wave lithotripsy with an effectiveness of 95%, evaluated by proportion of stone free areas, and a complications rate of 13%; ureteroscopy with an effectiveness of 85% and a complications rate of 32%; and finally conventional surgery, with the highest percentage in effectiveness, 97%, but with a complications rate of 13% being the cause of greater morbility compared with the first two procedures. Ureteroscopy and lithotripsy in pediatric patients it is a procedure almost non-invasive, with prompt recovery, it is sure and can be carried instead of the conventional (open) surgery, reducing morbility and the costs for public institutions.
