ABSTRACT
Objective: our objective was to analyze the relationship between death in children with burns and the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).
Material and methods: we employed an analytic retrospective design between two groups of children with burns in a study conducted between 1989 and 2003, including discharge of intensive therapy for death (case), and for improvement (control). Study unit were from clinical files. The instrument used was the validated SIRS scale. C-variables such as age and burn body surface were included.
Results: 35 files of children cared for were studied by burn; 3.5 years was age average. Second and third-degree burns coincided in 34.3 % of times, and probability of dying in this situation was 41.7 %. SIRS was present 74.3 % of discharged patients, and probability of death with relation to SIRS was 34 %. Significant difference between both groups according to SIRS was found (p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusions: SIRS is a condition that increases the probability that children with burns will die.
