ABSTRACT
Introduction. Depressive disorder constitute the main found psychiatric disorder in patients with epilepsy. Generally, patients who present comorbid epilepsy and depression do not receive treatment for their depression and, therefore, they have a poor quality of life.
Objectives. To know the prevalence of depression in patients with epilepsy in the Hospital Central Militar and to value its quality of life.
Methods. A cross-sectional study was made, studying 205 patients with epilepsy diagnosis, applying two depression scales (Montgomery-Asberg and Zing-Conde) and one of quality of life. Quality of life in patients with depression and without depression was determined.
Results. In both scales to measure depression we found an increased prevalence and less quality of life in patients with depression was obtained comparing them against which did not present depression with statistically significant difference (p ‹ 0.0001).
Conclusions. The prevalence of depression is increased between the population with epilepsy. It exists a smaller quality of life between the population of patients who suffer comorbid epilepsy and depression that between patients only with epilepsy.
