Background. Editorial analysis of biomedical journals contributes to their scientific and editorial quality and defines future editorial strategies.
Objective. To effect the editorial analysis of the Revista Neurología, Neurocirugia y Psiquiatria (RNNP) from 2002 to 2006.
Method. A retrospective descriptive study of papers published at the RNNP was done, according standards of publication, process and editorial content as well as diffusion and representation.
Results. RNNP mission and vision are clearly stated. Compliance with international standards: It counts with an active Editorial Board. More than 90% of their authors are external. Publication date shows a 12 days of delayed. Spanish article titles (means of 10.5 words), English article titles (means of 10.9 words). Spanish keywords mean were 3.7 words, and English keywords mean were 3.9 words. The 75% of authors were Mexicans, 25% were foreigners. Spanish abstracts average had 312 words, English abstracts average had 278 words. Peer review average 2.6 reviewers by each paper. There was a 103-day delay on average between reception and acceptance and a 24-day delay between acceptance and publication. Editorial content shows that 55.6% were research papers and 31% were review papers. The 73.5% of the authors were men and 26.5 women. The main thematic areas were psychiatry (34.1%) and neurology (30.7%). Rejected index before peer review was 27% and acceptance index after peer review was 37%. Diffusion and representation is adequate either nationally or internationally.
Conclusions. RNNP is a biomedical journal which comply with process and content editorial standards and respond adequately to its mission and vision with a good international projection. There are important challenges to accomplish in terms of continuous editorial quality improvement and a greater international database representation.
