ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic degenerative diseases, as coronary heart disease, have a high frequency of depressive symptoms (17 to 27%), this increases risk of cardiovascular events and death.
Objective: To determine prevalence of depressive symptoms among patients with ischemic coronary disease.
Material and methods: Prospective, descriptive, and cross-sectional study in patients with coronary artery diseases, from Intern Medicine Service of Hospital Regional Lic. Bentio Juárez García, of Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. For the diagnosis of depressive symptoms, Beck Depressive Inventory was used.
Results: Fifty-six patients were studied, 11% had myocardial infarction, 61% stable angina, and 28% unstable angina. Global average for Beck inventory was 21.08 ± 9.7 points. Prevalence of depressive symptoms was 43 in 56 (77%). Beck inventory score for those patients was 24.7 ± 7.6 points.
Conclusions: Prevalence of depressive symptoms was high. It is relevant to identify depression in patients with coronary artery disease and to treat depression to improve prognosis.
