ABSTRACT
Introduction: Midgut volvulus is an acute surgical emergency, which most common in neonates. Typically, these patients present with acute onset of bilious vomit.
Material and method: Ten neonates with midgut volvulus as a complication of intestinal malrotation are presented. The risk in the variables of volvulus and bowel necrosis were statistically assessed.
Results: Seven were male patients. All newborns were at least 24 hours of age when operated; all had bowel necrosis and four of them a short bowel syndrome. Odss was 1.7 for volvulus and 5.2 for necrosis.
Conclusions: When volvulus is present the risk of bowel infarction is high.
