ABSTRACT
Objective: We undertook this study to describe the clinical and pathological characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma of the ocular surface (SCOS) and demonstrate surgical results.
Methods: We analyzed the clinical records of 32 cases from May 1996-May 2007 in the Ophthalmology Department of the General Hospital of Mexico. We performed the clinicopathological correlation including patient’s age, sex, symptoms, treatment, extension, metastases and recurrences.
Results: The study group was comprised of 32 cases: two with dysplasia (6.25%), 12 with carcinoma in situ (37.5%) and 18 with invasive squamous cell carcinoma (56.25%). Mean age was 60.7 years (range: 14-86 years). The most frequently observed clinical characteristic was a whitish-grey tumor with foreign body sensation. Tumor extension was found in 23 cases (71.8%). Treatment options included tumor removal in 12 cases (37.5%), tumor resection with cryotherapy in 14 cases (43.75%), enucleation in two cases (6.25%) with intraocular involvement, and exenteration in four cases (12.5%) in tumors infiltrating the orbit. Follow-up was from 2 to 5 years in only nine cases. None of these cases developed recurrences or metastases.
Conclusions: SCOS was the most common conjunctival malignancy in the studied population. We found that the tumor occurred predominantly in elderly patients, and excision and adjunctive cryotherapy resulted in good tumor control rates.
