ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hypertension is a chronic disease commonly increased and is associated with one of every five deaths in Mexico, hence the need to continue strengthening the body of knowledge of this disease. This paper examines the prevalence of hospital discharge diagnoses of this disease.
Objective: Describe the behavior of hypertension in hospital discharge diagnoses of for ten years at the National Institute of Cardiology Ignacio Chavez.
Methodology: A descriptive study was conducted, with a sub sample of the database of hospital morbidity variables that included age, gender, origin, general condition and condition-specific, according to the international statistical classification of diseases. We studied discharges from 1998 to 2007, was captured in Excel and analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences.
Results: 1,737 diagnoses were studied hospital discharge, women accounted for 60.1%, 53.7% had their residence in the Federal District, 67.2% were hypertensive heart disease and hypertension essential 21.5%, was observed an upward trend regarding age.
Conclusions: Hypertension is one of the factors that most increases cardiovascular risk, these diseases are one of the major health problems and in turn constitute a major challenge for nurses as it has been demonstrated that interventions by health education are highly effective in controlling and monitoring of chronic diseases.
