ABSTRACT
Background: Craneal trauma (CT) is a injury on cranium and conteny, includes simple lessons, cranial fractures, brain edema, difuse axonal damage, brain hemorrhage by falling, accident in bicycle, or automobile. Cranial injury in children are common, the incidence in Mexico is unknown. Objective: Know the frequency of cases in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, (PICU) of Hospital Universitario de Puebla (HUP) of CT in January 2006 at May 2008. Material and methods: Study retrospective descriptive observational, transverse in the PICU, the results analyze by descriptive statistic and medides of central tendency. Results: Analyze 57 cases; 21 (36.8%) female, 36 (63.2%) male. Serious CT and epidural hematoma was the cause more frequent, in 13 cases (22.8%), associated at male (76.9%), preschool age (24%). Found 2 types of discharges, resolute (85%) and defunctions (15%). 13 (22.8) patients. 8 (14%) die associated at CT serious and hematoma subdural. Conclusions: CT is a health problem in pediatric age in Mexico, have a grand mortality and morbility, majority of cases are prevenible.
