ABSTRACT
The rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a fungical, lethal and uncommon disease usually observed in diabetic or immunodeficient patients. Usually the treatment is done by controlling the underlying disease, as well as a radical debridement, usually a partial or total maxillectomy is done and in some cases is also included ethmoidectomy and orbital exenteration. As well as therapy with Amphothericin B is initiated. This case report describes a 69-year-old male patient that suffered a rhinocerebral mucormycosis of an atypical evolution; due to the initial phase which did not present the typical metabolic chaos and the abnormal timing of appearance of the signs. As soon as the diagnosis was confirmed, a treatment with amphotericin B was established and an hemimaxillectomy was carried out with debridement by means of Weber-Ferguson approach.
