ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the prevalence of dental fluorosis in children, aged 6 to 12, and its relationship to fluorine concentration in drinking water, in Mexticacán, Jalisco.
Material and Methods: Ecological exploratory study. 355 children were examined according to diagnose dental fluorosis. Fluorine concentration in drinking water sources was determined using spectophotometry SPADNS, evaluated according to the NOM(NMX AA-077 y NOM127, NOM041).
Results: 94.3% children presented fluorosis. 5% had 5 degree damage, presenting severe teeth damage, and 63% presented 3 and 4 damage degrees. 5% had 5 degree damage, presenting severe teeth damage. 50% of 24 drinking water samples were above fluorine adequate levels.
Conclusions: There are significant differences in age, time of residence, drinking water type and dental fluorosis, p. ‹0.05. Differences between average fluorine concentration in water wells with cold and thermal water were found, ‹0.05. High fluorine concentration represents a health risk for the children.
