ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to evaluate the psychometric performance of the "Parents Perception of Symptoms and Disability in Asthma" (PSI, after its abbreviation in Spanish) questionnaire in Mexican population. The study included 330 patients with asthma and their caregivers. Variables evaluated were the parents’ perception of symptoms, social class, gender, age, asthma severity, FEV
1 and traditional indexes of morbidity. An experts panel and 30 primary caregivers of children with asthma participated in the linguistic adaptation to Mexico through evaluation of items in interviews. Once items were adapted to the language, evaluation of questionnaire’s psychometric performance was made in 300 patients and their caregivers. Results showed a suitable validity and reliability. The internal structure was unidimensional, scale was reduced from 17 to 14 items, and explained variance was appropriate (56.51%). Reliability was satisfactory (test-retest; r = 0.96, p = 0.01; Cronbach’s alpha of 0.93). We concluded that PSI questionnaire is an instrument with good psychometric properties that can be used in Mexican population.
